MONARCH OF BERMUDA / NEW AUSTRALIA / ARKADIA

BUILT BY VICKERS-ARMSTRONG IN NEWCASTLE. SHE WAS LAUNCHED AS THE  'MONARCH OF BERMUDA'  FOR FURNESS WITHY AND CO IN 1931.WHEN LAUNCHED SHE HAD THREE FUNNELS,BUT IN 1947 SHE CAUGHT FIRE IN HEBBURN-ON-TYNE WHILE UNDERGOING A REFIT.SHE WAS ORIGINALLY DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS, BUT  SHE WAS RE-BUILT IN SOUTHAMPTON BY THORNYCROFT AND RE-EMERGED AS THE 'NEW AUSTRALIA' IN 1949,WITH ONLY ONE FUNNEL SHE MADE HER FIRST VOYAGE IN 1950, LEAVING SOUTHAMPTON FOR SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA CARRYING MIGRANTS TO THEIR NEW HOME. AFTER SYDNEY SHE RETURNED TO THE U.K VIA JAPAN , WHERE SHE PICKED UP BRITISH TROOPS RETURNING BACK HOME. SHE WAS USED AS A TROOP SHIP AGAIN IN 1951, PICKING UP MOLUCCAN TROOPS TO TAKE THEM BACK TO HOLLAND.  AGAIN DURING THE KOREAN WAR, SHE WAS USED AS A TROOP SHIP,CARRYING AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS TO PUSAN. SHAW SAVILL AND ALBION LINE USED HER FROM 1950 TO 1957 ON THE EMIGRANT RUN DOWN TO AUSTRALIA. IN 1958 SHE WAS SOLD TO A GREEK LINE AND RE-NAMED 'ARKADIA'. IN 1966 SHE WAS SENT TO SPAIN AND SCRAPPED.

DUCHESS OF BEDFORD / EMPRESS OF FRANCE

BUILT IN GLASGOW BY JOHN BROWN & CO, IN THE LATE 1920'S.SHE WAS CHARTERED TO FURNESS WITHY IN 1933 TO BE THE MONARCH OF BERMUDA'S CONSORT. ONCE THE QUEEN OF BERMUDA WAS BUILT SHE WAS RETURNED TO CANADIAN PACIFIC. IN 1947 SHE WAS REFITTED BY FAIRFIELD SHIP BUILDING AT GOVAN, AND WAS RE-NAMED 'EMPRESS OF FRANCE'.SHE WAS SCRAPPED IN 1960.
